Business Legal Services, Inc.
Originally started under the umbrella of the Community Services Committee, Business Legal Services, Inc., was formed to further support a growing need within the Stamford/Norwalk community. What is Business Legal Services, Inc.? Business Legal Services, Inc. is a tax exempt non-profit organization formed by The Fairfield County Bar Association, Inc. It works with volunteer lawyers who provide free legal services for individuals and business entities located in revitalization areas or located in other areas where pro bono legal assistance would benefit the community or a disadvantaged segment of the population. What communities are eligible for this assistance? Initially, Business Legal Services, Inc. had designated the South End and Waterside sections of Stamford as eligible communities. In addition, Business Legal Services, Inc. will accept applications from individuals and/or businesses located in towns served by The Fairfield County Bar Association. Those towns include Stamford, Norwalk, Darien, New Canaan, Westport, Wilton and Greenwich. Why was the initial focus on the South End and Waterside sections of Stamford? These areas are part of the Stamford Enterprise Zone revitalization project to revitalize and promote those communities and neighborhoods. The pro bono legal assistance project sponsored by Business Legal Services, Inc. is intended to assist in that effort. Are there any financial criteria for eligibility? Yes. The Applicant must be an existing small business or a start-up small business. In addition, the Applicant must meet certain financial criteria established by Business Legal Services, Inc. demonstrating a need for free legal services. Does Business Legal Services, Inc. provide legal services? No. Business Legal Services, Inc. is a referral source and will use its best efforts to find volunteer lawyers for approved Applicants. These volunteer lawyers will provide free legal services within the scope of the application. The Applicant's relationship is directly with the volunteer lawyer and his or her firm, and the approved Applicant will sign an engagement letter with that lawyer. Business Legal Services, Inc. takes no responsibility as to the actual providing of legal services; it merely finds a volunteer lawyer for the Applicant.
